Chickpea Lettuce Boats

I sometimes look longingly at foods others are eating and sometimes I will admit to feeling that eating healthy is hard to follow through on.  I fight within myself to stay true to what I want my body to be eating…food that is good for me.  Sometimes this battle is just too hard for me.  As Romans 7:15 NKJV says, “For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.” I find that having a plan ahead of time to eat right, is very helpful to fighting those temptations.  This recipe is one… Read More

Immanuel

Scientists are aglow over the discovery of the most distant, supermassive black hole ever (ignoring, of course, the supermassive black hole that is the Kansas City Chiefs right now). This sucker is a billion times larger than our sun, and sits 13 billion light years away from us. You don’t want to know how long it would take to drive there. This star sucker has led one Brazilian astronomer to wonder whether the Big Bang happened at all. After all, how could this gigantic black hole be as old as the Big Bang? A popular science website asked: “What if the Big Bang wasn’t the beginning?” What if there’s… Read More

Don’t let the Bed Bugs Bite

My last experience with bed bugs was a close encounter. At the Iowa-Missouri camp meeting, they invaded Sunnydale Academy. Half the rooms down our hall (the hall with small children) had them. Laura and I were seriously praying the little buggers wouldn’t find their way to our room. The room across the hall was evacuated. Maintenance sealed and superheated the room over 100 degrees for hours in order to kill them. The family moved back in and got bit again. So I understand the horror one Cincinatti teen had when he discovered them in his parent’s apartment. Rather than calling maintenance, he took matters into his own hands and tried… Read More

The White Houses

You don’t have to win an election to live at the White House; all you need is money. (If you just want to visit a scale model, you can find them all over the place–from Austria to the Wisconsin Dells to California.) A builder in Atlanta built a 16,500 square-foot version for his family, but had to sell it for $10m after the 2008 housing crisis. An engineer built his own version in Virginia, before he was struck with empty nest syndrome and parted with it for a measly $5m. But the king of all imitators is Chinese billionaire Huang Qiaoling, whose 55,000 square-foot version is the exact size of… Read More

Take Heart: He can give you a new one

“Therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Galatians 6:10 A good one to keep in our hearts, I think sometimes we forget that we should be most kind and loving to those closest to us. I think lots of times we just think others in the church should know better, or we give “tough love” when we should “do good” as the verse says to them. Because if we are not encouraging one another and lifting each other up who will? “Therefore encourage one another and build him up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 We need to… Read More
